An African First
Chamber of Mines platinum fuel cell
On March 31, 2015, we installed a 100kW platinum fuel cell at the Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg to meet baseload demands at the site. Being grid-independent, it supplies the building with baseload power regardless of the performance of the surrounding grid. The minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Dr Rob Davies, officially unveiled the installation.
This turnkey project was funded jointly by the Chamber of Mines, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Industrial Development Corporation and Mitochondria Energy Company.

[...] Finding a commercially viable platinum-based fuel cell technology is something of a Holy Grail for South Africa, which is home to about 80% of global platinum reserves.
If the technology takes off, it will fundamentally alter the market for South Africa’s most important export product.
The Chamber of Mines in central Johannesburg has power even when load-shedding brings the rest of the country, including the chamber’s own members, to its knees. This is thanks to the 100 kilowatt (kW) platinum-based hydrogen fuel cell unit, which hums quietly in one of the outer quads of the building.
[...] Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, Minister Davies said being home to 80% of the world’s known platinum reserves puts South Africa at the forefront of developing fuel cell technology.
